Profile of a Makeup Artist

Not all fashion related jobs have to do with clothing or accessories. In fact, many involve completely different mediums, like the job of a makeup artist. It is the makeup artist that creates the perfectly airbrushed look we are used to seeing on celebrities and the makeup artist that creates the innovative masterpieces we see in high fashion advertisements on models' faces. Makeup artists often went to a cosmetology school in order to learn their trade, however, you need to develop your own aesthetic. The particular makeup artist that I give you a link to (it's at the end of this post) did not go to a school until she already taught herself a lot of what she needed to know. In fact, she says that going to school for cosmetology only helped her refine her technique, she had already developed it. The most important thing in the business, besides talent, is networking. The more people you know and who know you, the more jobs you will get and, therefore, the more money you will make. Tools of the trade of a makeup artist are makeup brushes, eyelash curlers, fake eyelashes, makeup (of course!), and any other funky things she/he might use to add to the design (like gems or flower petals).

The job of a makeup artist isn't always pretty. Some makeup artists are specifically trained to do special effects makeup such as creating the look of cuts, scars, or other skin imperfections on an actor or actress for a movie. Many horror movies and science fiction movies employ this type of makeup artistry.
